News on paper or online?

Personally, when I read a book, I really do want to book in my hands, I want to turn the page, feel the paper and see the words on the paper. Even though my books can show some sign of opening and closing, I still like to guard them and keep them on the shelf. I don't like lending my books, what if the person spills coffee on it? Or folds the corners of the pages? No way.

Despite of my strong support for printed books, I prefer to read my news online. As Dana wrote in her response, she does not like getting her fingers grey, and neither do I. I hate having a dull, big and difficult newspaper on the table, trying to find the articles that interest me. I am way too impatient for that. Occasionally when visiting my parents, I do like to flip through the newspaper if I have a few extra minutes in my hands. Just for the nostalgia. It is a fun thing to do, sometimes. But only sometimes. For my everyday news, I go online.

I have to admit though, I am somewhat lazy when it comes to news. Or let's say, I only read what I am interested in. And that is entertainment news. Sometimes I feel embarrassed because I have no idea what is going on in the world. My knowledge of politics for example, is close to none. Finland just got a new president and I would not even know about it without Facebook I would assume. Yes, it is pretty embarrassing for a 24-year-old but I always defend myself by saying that because I have so many articles, novels and book chapters that I have to read for studying, I just cannot make myself to read more uninteresting stuff on my free time. Therefore, I just rely on Facebook to inform me, or more appropriately, my friends on Facebook to keep me up to date with their status updates.

As for paying for online content, I do not know if I would be willing to do that. Now that I am so used to getting my information free and fast, I do not think I would like to change that anytime soon. Although, if every single online space would start taking money from their users and nothing was free anymore, then I would of course have to pay. But I don't think that would be possible. I mean, there are always ways to go around these fees and registration things. Or if there is not, someone will find a way pretty soon. And I, as a poor student, would probably choose the free way. For now at least, I will gladly enjoy my free information source.

  1. Hi Emni,
I agree-- I'm used to reading my news free and online, and it would be hard to go back. (I'd rather spend my money on other things when I have it.) The one thing I miss about a print newspaper is the coupons.

  2. I agree with you. I love books. And I also don't like to lend my books out.

I don't think you should be embarrassed about not being up-to-date on what is going on in the world. I am the same way. I get what I can between studying and reading required material, but I think our brains would turn to mush if we tried to digest that much material.

  3. When i was in high school i always read newspapers. High school in China is insane. We have too many pressures from not only school but also family. So we don't have time to go online.
